Dont Forget!

This fall has been one of incredible adventure, deep life lessons, and amazing family time.  Over the past few moths I have had the opportunity to travel the country rock climbing, surfing, skiing, and catching up with friends and family I haven’t seen in quite some time.  One of my favorite parts of the last few months was learning how to surf.  Upon my arrival in San Diego I soon realized that surfing is very much a way of life.  Much like the mountains are a way of life where I come from in the Northwest; Surfing is something that consumes your soul, it centers your spirit.  Being out in the water allows you to slow down and focus on one thing at a time.  (Like not getting crushed by the next wave, haha).

Often times when we are pursuing the life of our dreams we need a gentle reminder of who we are and what we live for.  It’s easy to be so focused on one goal that we forget where we came from and what truly makes us come alive.  Being focused on the end goal is a good thing, however we can’t forget to enjoy the journey because that’s where our character is refined.
When I was in College I spent a semester in Patagonia.  During this experience I decided that I wanted to live the life of my dreams.  I wasn’t sure what that meant but I knew I was created to live an adventure and I was prepared to find out what that was.  Now I sit here over five years later.  I work as a mountain guide, ski patrol, and I get to travel and climb when I’m not working; But none of that matters.  The thing that matters most is the ones I met along the way that contributed to where I am now.
For instance, I have three little siblings.  Brayden is 9, Maddie is 5, and Allyson is 5.  My brother Mason is 20 now and I will talk more about his influence in my life later.  The three little ones are the absolute love of my life.  Looking at the world through their perspective has taught me so much.  Brayden is a genius.  He has a desire to learn and absorb everything around him.  Maddie is a fireball.  She is always smiling and taught me to laugh and dance when all else is falling apart.  And Ally is patient and loving.  She loves everyone and expects nothing back.  She taught me to love with pure abandonment.  It is these three big reminders that never let me forget where I came from and that my life and choices affect everything around me.
During my time in college I was blessed with the best group of brothers anyone could as for.  Since graduation I have lots touch with many of them and my heart breaks with the distance.  I remember them in my prayers and I know they do the same.  I am constantly reminded by there very presence that there are people in this world loving and supporting me.  Thank you brothers, I will never forget you and long for the day we are re-united.
My best friend Eric is one of the main reasons I have been able to make a career in the guiding world.  He has helped me get a job, acquire more knowledge and training, and always been faithful to push me to the next level.  Thank you brother,  I am blessed to have you in my life.
The most important lesson my mother taught me growing up was that my brother is all I have.  When Mason and I would get in to fights she would say, “you boys better not fight because one day that’s all you boys will have.”  She constantly reminded us that we needed to support each other and be there no matter what.  This winter Mason and I have lived together and provided for one another.  This spring he is getting married to his high school sweetheart.  Through his quiet fervor for life I have learned to always stand for what you believe in and fight for your loved ones.  And the greatest battles can be won without ever opening your mouth. Thank you Mason, actions truly speak louder than words.

Enough “sappyness”, time to ski!
